Cill Rialaig - September 2018

I had a fabulous time on a residency at Cill Rialaig Arts Centre, Ballinskelligs, Co. Kerry in September 2018

​

It is such a beautiful place - and artist's village with individual cottage studios right at the end of the road at Bolus Head - over looking the wild Atlantic.

My aim was to do a series of sea studies in oils on paper of the changing light on the sea - so I was given the lovely cottage no 1 which is closest to the sea! I spent the first 4 days out the back of the cottage in all weathers painting a series of thirty 25 x 25 cm studies

I then had time to experiment and explore - which is the main reason these residencies are awarded - to give the artist/writer/musician time to just be with their practice, with no distractions (apart from the other people on residencies)

​

I rediscovered my love of plein air drawing and made a pact with myself never to work from photographs again - a practice that has changed everything about my work.
